Francisca Prieto: Las tres dimensiones

The London-based artist, Francisca Prieto, opens her first exhibition in Chile – the country of her birth – this month, at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Santiago. 

Called Las Tres Dimensiones (‘The Three Dimensions’), it is a major retrospective of Prieto’s art from the past two decades. Her work forms part of important, private and public collections worldwide – such as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London – and 40 pieces will now go on show at Chile’s most prestigious art institution.

It will feature work from all the key series of Prieto’s career: from ‘Between Folds’ (in which she unbound the pages of old books and reworked them in stunning, 3D sculptures) to ‘Intrinsic Dimension’ (in which she used train tickets from years past to create beguiling, abstract sculptures that evoke myriad, personal journeys).

The exhibition is curated by Daniela Berger, who says ‘Francisca’s work revives and reconstructs objects, views and moments from the past – and celebrates their dignity and legacy in the present.

‘She carries out an investigation into the historic, symbolic and material use of things, employing mathematics and her power of synthesis to generate fresh, new readings’. 

 Las Tres Dimensiones will present the artist’s work in broadly chronological order, allowing an appreciation of her evolution over time. Other series to feature will be ‘Printed Matter’ (2002-2008); ‘Utopian Symbols’ (2013-2015); and ‘Traces of Absence’and ‘Reminiscence’ (both ongoing).

Born in Santiago in the 1970s, Prieto moved to London at the turn of the millennium and gained a Master’s degree at Central St Martin’s School of Art. She has lived and worked in the British capital ever since. Among her career highlights was exhibiting ‘Utopian Symbols’ at Palazzo Mora, during the 2017 Venice Biennale.   

 ‘Over the years, the materials and techniques with which I’ve made my work have changed,’ Prieto says, ‘but what has remained constant is my use of three dimensions – hence the title of this retrospective. Three dimensions are an invitation to study and discover, thus to be part of the process and the work itself’.

Las Tres Dimensiones is supported by the Chilean financial institution, LarrianVial, and counts also on the participation of British art critic, Alastair Smart, who has followed Prieto’s career for many years and will be joining her and Berger for a pair of talks in the opening week of the exhibition*

‘Las Tres Dimensiones’ is being held at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, in Santiago, from 30 May to 4 August 2019; with the support of LarrainVial together with Ley de Donaciones Culturales and the British Council. Organised by Fundación de Gestión Cultural Lustro, in collaboration with the Corporación Patrimonio Cultural de Chile.

“Las tres dimensiones”es el nombre de la exposición que a fines de mayo traerá por primera vez a Chile la obra de la destacada artista nacional Francisca Prieto, formada en la Universidad Católica y radicada desde 2001 en Londres luego de realizar una maestría en arte de la Universidad Central Saint Martins. .

Con la curaduría de Daniela Bergery la participación del crítico británico de arte Alastair Smart -quien ha seguido de cerca la carrera de Prieto- la muestra se plantea como una revisión antológica de su obra, la cual forma parte de importantes colecciones privadas y públicas; entre estas últimas se destaca la Tate Gallery, la biblioteca de arte del Victoria & Albert Museum y la British Library, institución que además destacó la obra The Antibook como representante de todos los libros de artistas en la publicación A history of book in 100 books, y la exhibió al público en su exposición Treasures of the British Libraryel año 2006.  Colecciones privadas con obras de Prieto incluyen las de importantes instituciones financieras y exclusivos hoteles del Reino Unido. 

Además de exposiciones individuales y colectivas en diversos países del mundo, las obras de la artista se han exhibido en prestigiosos eventos internacionales como la Bienal de Arte de Venecia del año 2017 y Pinta Londres 2012 y 2013. 

En su trabajo Francisca Prietodesarrolla una profunda investigación sobre la conformación material, histórica y simbólica de los objetos y sus usos, que despliega en obras fundamentalmente tridimensional.  La artista recurre a las matemáticas y la capacidad de síntesis para apropiarse de materiales de diverso origen y naturaleza, produciendo nuevos relatos y relecturas. Se trata de un trabajo riguroso y sistemático que, al tiempo que desafía las fronteras entre formatos y técnicas, instala también, mediante el análisis estructural y conceptual, preguntas acerca de la identidad de los objetos, los códigos visuales, el lenguaje y los contextos de significado que condicionan las percepciones y construcciones culturales.  

Como programa público asociado a la exhibición y dentro de la primera semana de esta, se realizarán conversatorios con la presencia de la artista, la curadora Daniela Berger y el crítico Alastair Smart. Estos serán el miércoles 29 de mayo a las 18:00 horas en el Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes y el jueves 30 a las 19:00 horas en la sede Presidente Errázuriz de la Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez. Estas actividades cuentan con el apoyo de British Council.

La muestra permanecerá abierta al público hasta el 4 de agosto, y es organizada por Fundación Lustro Gestión Cultural, con la colaboración de la Corporación Patrimonio Cultural de Chile y el auspicio de LarraínVial acogido a la Ley de Donaciones Culturales.
